Sisters of the Little Company of Mary (LCM)
The Sisters of the Little Company of Mary are an international, Catholic congregation of Religious Sisters founded by Venerable Mary Potter in Hyson Green, Nottingham, England on 2 July 1877. As an International Congregation we minister in these countries, Australia, England. Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, South Korea, Tonga, United States of America and Zimbabwe. We recognise that our Little Company of Mary charism is called to stand in solidarity with the Divine Creation and must act in the face of the overwhelming environmental global crisis as it affects all aspects of creation. Moved by the expansive beauty and mystery of creation, we are called to live in right relationship with planet Earth and participate in her ongoing flourishing.
Australian Catholic University (ACU) has officially enrolled in the seven-year journey to implement the seven goals of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform. Inspired by the Pope Francis’s second encyclical, Laudato Si’: Care for our Common Home, universities around the world were invited to commit to a global implemental plan which began taking enrolments on November 14. ACU announced its commitment to the Laudato Si’ Action Plan in October, to mark the Feast of St Francis Assisi, who is the inspiration behind Laudato Si’.
Universities that register to be on the action platform before April 22 (Earth Day) next year will be officially enrolled in the “journey towards sustainability in the spirit of integral ecology”. Executive Dean for the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy Professor Dermot Nestor and Laudato Si’ Consultant at ACU Jacqui Rémond are among the university’s representatives on the Vatican’s University Working Group, established by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development to encourage the higher education sector to enter the platform.
Sister of the Good Samaritan
Founded in Australia in 1857, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict have also established communities in Japan, Kiribati and Philippines. As their name indicates, the Sisters, Oblates and Partners in Ministry commit themselves to “being neighbour”, especially to those who are disadvantaged, lack resources or are isolated and traumatised by family violence, dislocation or other circumstances. They have discovered the joy and pain of being neighbour to planet Earth, as they join with all creation in singing God’s praises and witness the destruction and vulnerability of the planet. Ecological conversion is sought in all aspects of life from prayer and simple living, to advocating for cleaner energy, standing with communities threatened by climate change and sourcing ethical investment platforms. Laudato Si’ is impetus, challenge and affirmation of this commitment.
Australia’s oldest Congregation was established in the colony of New South Wales when the first Religious Sisters of Charity were sent to Sydney by the foundress, Ven. Mary Aikenhead, in 1838. Service of the poor – characterised by flexibility, courage, and dynamic awareness, as we participate in the mission of God – remains with us as a living witness to the charism of our foundress. Our community and ministry endeavours are aligned with our Ignatian heritage which continues to inform us today.
Commitment to the Laudato Si’ Action Platform came as a result of the Congregation’s General Chapter in March 2021. We are engaged with the Platform through the constant work of our Care of our Common Home Committee and various inter-Congregational partnerships. Our sisters and colleagues strive towards personal ecological conversion and advocate for systemic change to heal our common home.
